This Ancient Greek coin is from the City-State of Syracuse in Sicily. Syracuse was a colony of the Ancient Greek city of Corinth in mainland Greece. Corinth was considered to be one of the big four most powerful city-states of mainland Greece alongside Athens, Sparta and Thebes. Syracuse was the most powerful Greek city state west of Greece, contended only by the city-state of Taras in Southern Italy proper, then known as Μεγάλη Ἑλλάς or "Greater Greece." Syracuse maintained it's independence from it's founding in 734 BCE to it's final downfall in 212 BCE at the hands of the Roman Replublic following Syracuse's alliance with Hannibal in the Second Punic War. The city-state switched between a Tyranny (Monarchy by popularity vote) and Democracy. This particular coin is from one of the Democratic periods in Syracuse's history.
